    Coming North

In the 20th century, a wave of African-Americans migrated from the Deep South to northern cities for jobs and a better future. The bold decision to move north sometimes meant heartbreak and danger, but in places like 伯洛伊特, the newcomers also built vibrant 社区.

This part of the city of 伯洛伊特’s little-known history is seeing the light of day thanks to a public history course at the college and a collaboration with the community called “Coming Up North: A History Harvest about Black Migration to 伯洛伊特, Wisconsin.”

    They Made History

More than 130 years ago, siblings Grace and Laurence Ousley grew up in the only Black household located anywhere near 伯洛伊特学院. Their lives were far from easy, yet each made a mark that continues to resonate today.

Laurence Ousley entered the college’s preparatory department, the 伯洛伊特 Academy, in 1890 and studied for three years in the Scientific Division, leaving just before graduating in order to support his family.

In 1900, his sister, Grace Ousley, became the first African-American to graduate from 伯洛伊特 High School. Laurence helped her through four years at 伯洛伊特学院, where in 1904 she became its first African-American woman graduate, just nine years after the college embraced coeducation.

“The day a freshman English paper was due, Professor Bernie Morrissey called on me to read mine in class. But I had been so busy with Homecoming, I only had a rough draft. Instead of putting me on the spot, he invited me to his office, where he spent two hours going over what I had written. And then he accepted it late.

“That a professor like Bernie Morrissey would take time to help a lowly freshman tells you a lot about 伯洛伊特. It’s a place where people are invested in each other’s success, and where you create lasting relationships that carry you through your career and life.”

“A political theorist, Professor Jill Budny arranged to hold a seminar with students from other colleges to compare and contrast Shakespeare as a political strategist with Machiavelli and others. She invited me and a few other students along, and then quizzed us on the salient points of the discussion during the two-hour ride home.

“During my senior year, she also invited me and about 30 students over to her house for dinner — in Milwaukee. And we all went, that’s how much we thought of her.

“It was no surprise that, with such dedication, Professor Budny won the Underkofler Excellence in Undergraduate Teaching Award. And it’s no secret that brilliant mentors like her are what makes a 伯洛伊特 education priceless.”
